What is Jivamukti Yoga?

Jivamukti Yoga is a path to enlightenment through compassion for all beings.

Jivamukti Yoga is a yoga method that combines a dynamic physical practice and other yogic techniques with philosophy and spiritual activism. Jivamukti Yoga was developed in the 1980s in New York after many years of personal practice and several extended stays in India.

The Sanskrit term 'asana' is used here in its original sense: 'seat' or 'connection'. The physical practice of asana is about the connection to the earth, i.e. to everything on it - without exception.

The Jivamukti Yoga method utilises a challenging physical practice inspired by Ashtanga Yoga to bring all our relational levels back into harmony and alignment and to reflect on them. Meditation, mantra chanting, music and the study of yogic scriptures complement each Jivamukti Yoga class.

The basic ideas of Jivamukti Yoga are expressed through five pillars that form the basis of Jivamukti Yoga. Jivamukti Yoga teachers fill these pillars with life and pass them on to practitioners through their teaching.

The five pillars of the Jivamukti Yoga method

AHIMSA

(Non-violence)
A non-violent, compassionate lifestyle towards other animals, the environment and all living beings, supported by ethical vegetarianism (veganism) and animal rights.

SHASTRA

(Writings)
Study of ancient yogic scriptures, focus of the month and Sanskrit chanting.

BHAKTI

(Devotion)
Recognising that experiencing and experiencing the divine or great self is the goal of all yoga practices. Bhakti can be experienced through chanting, setting an all-encompassing intention or other devotional practices.

NADA

(sound)
The development of a sound and vibrational body and mind through careful listening. Nada can become part of a yoga class through the playing of music or spoken word, through silence or through the voice of the teacher.

DHYANA

(Meditation)
Through the practice of meditation we create a connection to the eternal, unchanging truth and reality within.

These five pillars are not explicitly taught or mentioned in all courses. In an open class, however, the five pillars play a special role because it is the teacher's task to make them tangible and experienceable for the students through the teaching style, the course content, the music and the sequence.

Each of the five pillars is clearly recognisable in every Open Class. In this way, every student can learn not to see the asana practice as separate from spiritual teachings, chanting of mantra or meditation, but to understand all parts of the Jivamukti Yoga method as an integral whole. In this way, a complete path to our goal emerges: enlightenment through compassion towards all beings.

Each month there is also an essay, the Focus of the Month, written by a senior teacher. This focus also reflects the five pillars and inspires the content of all Open classes around the world.

Highly recommend this wonderful yoga studio. As a yoga student, you get the highest quality at all levels here. And what I personally appreciate so much: there are really good teachers here who really want to teach you something. And they can do it, because everyone I've experienced is highly trained and passionate about what they do.

For me, this is by far the best yoga studio in Berlin! Here, yoga is understood as a holistic, spiritual practice - asanas go hand in hand with chanting, meditation and a deep sense of community. The loving and high-quality furnishings and the selection of great teachers create an atmosphere that I have never felt in any other studio. The team at the check-in is also incredibly friendly and helpful, and even minor problems are dealt with immediately with friendly support. Overall, it feels like being invited to a place where you can really leave the stress of the day behind you.
